Fredericks Freiser Gallery is proud to announce an exhibition of new paintings by John Wesley. Previously Wesley has exhibited at Fogg Art Museum, Harvard University, Cambridge, MA (2001), PS1/MoMA (2000), Chinati Foundation, Marfa, Texas (1998), Portikus, Frankfurt (1993), Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam (1993) and Donald Judd’s 101 Spring Street Gallery, New York (1993, 1986). Wesley was also a featured artist in Parkett (No. 62).The artist’s recent gallery shows include Gagosian Gallery London (2001), Daniel Weinberg Gallery, Los Angeles (2002), and Tomio Koyama Gallery, Tokyo (2003). A permanent installation of the artist’s work will be installed at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, Texas in 2004. This will be the artist’s fifth one person exhibition at Fredericks Freiser Gallery.

For over forty years, John Wesley has created an unrelenting and remarkably singular body of work whose subject is no less than the American psyche. While many artists of his generation have used the popular image to explore the cultural landscape, Wesley has employed a comic-strip style and compositional rigor to make deeply personal, often hermetic paintings that strike at the core of our most primal fears, joys, and desires.

The nine new paintings in this exhibition focus on couples and coupling. Along with his signature color palette of cotton candy pinks and blues, Wesley has returned to familiar iconography including female nudes and Dagwood Bumstead.
