In a baker's dozen of large new acrylic paintings, David Humphrey continues to combine figural imagery and rich abstract passages. His figures, human or animal, are sometimes mysterious—does Sidewalkdepict a greeting or a mugging?—sometimes sweet, as in Posing, in which a pair of women stand before the camera. Perhaps most striking is a surprisingly sexual canvas: in Two Mugs, a woman displays her rear end prominently to the viewer, her buttocks surreally replaced by staring female faces. Horsey and summery imagery also predominates. Reviewing a 2013 show, Raphael Rubinstein praised the painter's "iconographic daring and exquisite painterly skills," which are in abundant evidence here.
