Fredericks & Freiser
Established 1996
Fredericks & Freiser has been a defining voice in contemporary art since 1996. As one of the first galleries to open in Chelsea (the fourth to sign a lease and the sixth to open its doors), the gallery helped shape the neighborhood’s emergence as an international art destination. Designed by architect Andrew Ong, our current space on West 24th Street continues that legacy with an emphasis on clarity, intimacy, and visibility.
From the outset, Fredericks & Freiser has maintained an independent, risk-forward program—introducing artists whose work combines formal rigor with emotional, psychological, and narrative complexity. The gallery is known for giving first New York solo exhibitions to artists who later became defining voices in contemporary art, including Mary Reid Kelley, Jenna Gribbon, and Cristina de Miguel. Our fourteen solo exhibitions with John Wesley (widely regarded as a foundational figure in postwar American art) played a pivotal role in expanding critical discourse around his work.
We have also exhibited career-defining shows for artists such as Robert Overby, Marilyn Minter, David Humphrey, and Gary Panter (whose multidisciplinary practice bridges underground comics, set design, and punk graphics). From linguistic rupture to painterly ecstasy, the gallery’s program has consistently centered artists working at the edge of narrative, material, and emotional risk.
Our artists have been recognized with the MacArthur Fellowship, Guggenheim Fellowship, Rome Prize, Baloise Art Prize, and the Joan Mitchell Fellowship. Their work has appeared in major international exhibitions including the Whitney Biennial, Documenta, Site Santa Fe, and the Venice Biennale, and has been acquired by leading institutions such as MoMA, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Walker Art Center, SFMoMA, the Hammer Museum, and Tate Modern.
Over nearly three decades, Fredericks & Freiser has maintained a steady presence at major art fairs including The Armory Show, Frieze New York, Independent, NADA, and Untitled Miami. We were also an early participant in the original Gramercy International Art Fair, including its landmark Chateau Marmont edition.
The gallery’s artists have been featured on the covers of Artforum, Frieze, Art in America, Art News, Purple, Modern Painters, and Sculpture, with critical recognition from leading voices across the field.
While widely respected by curators, collectors, and critics, Fredericks & Freiser has retained a deliberately uncorporate ethos—valuing long-term relationships, intellectual rigor, and a conversational atmosphere that fosters true engagement with the work. Whether mounting solo exhibitions, curating historically resonant group shows, or introducing new voices, the gallery remains committed to presenting art that carries both formal clarity and psychological presence.
Looking ahead, Fredericks & Freiser continues to build on its legacy while championing a new generation of artists whose work reflects the urgency and complexity of this moment.
