Biography

Julie Moos uses a 4 x 5 camera, simple lighting and a traveling studio to make portraits of people in pairs. Working within the familiar framework of formal variation (clothes, posture, facial expression) within a serial format (background, spacing, placement), Moos depicts aspects of American culture that range from the friends and enemies in the graduating class of a high school in Alabama to farmers who raise genetically modified crops in Missouri. She has been the subject of recent one-person exhibitions at the Renaissance Society, University of Chicago, the Birmingham Museum of Art, AL, the Contemporary Museum of Art, Honolulu and was included in the Whitney Biennial, 2002.
