Biography

Marilyn Minter’s enamel on metal paintings and photographs mine the pathology of artifice and glamour. She employs an intensely zoomed-in perspective and a language of fashion tropes to realize a beauty that is neither entirely seductive nor grotesque. Ms. Minter switches back and forth between two mediums to investigate similar iconography. Whereas her photographs work as oddball counterparts to the easily identifiable language of fashion advertising, her paintings, amplified by a hyper-glossy enamel surface and a hands-on realism, brutally reconstruct an unsettling desire. She will be having a solo exhibition at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in 2005.
