Ross Simonini

March 19 through April 25, 2015

Opening reception: Thursday, March 19, 6-8PM

Fredericks & Freiser is pleased to announce a two-person exhibition of new works by Brian Belott and Ross Simonini.

Brian Belott and Ross Simonini are friends and collaborators. In the recent past, they have written long, ferocious text messages to each other, waging deep and silent wars that lasted for many days. In fits, they have collaborated, mostly on collages and drawings, some of which have been collected together into an artists’ book open edition to be released in concert with this exhibition. Both artists work with a curious salad of materials – food, calculators, rugs, napkins – but this show is a collection of their recent work on paper and canvas, varying from modest to immodestly sized.  In both cases, the artists’ ongoing work in performance and music seems to inform their markmaking. Belott draws with mustard on his rooftop in the rain. Simonini paints with his feet. Belott paints in the shower. Simonini washes the dishes with an unstretched canvas. Each looks for art under the kitchen table. Once, at the 2014 PERFORMA festival, the two of them conducted a 40-person choir to stomp and chant for their food.
